Description This fast-growing, tall, deciduous American tree has stunning autumn colours (orange to bright red), leaves with original shapes and furrowed bark. Pale green flowers appear in spring, before the new leaves.

How to grow it In full sun or partial shade, in an acidic soil.

Story time Native Americans used the dried leaves to make tea, or as a spice, and also for medical purposes. The oil obtained from the bark is still used nowadays to make root beer, and the leaves are also found in Cajun cuisine.
Caution: the safrole contained in Sassafras leaves can cause cancer, at high levels. However, this substance is removed from the commercial products.
