A massive Mexican palm with a dense crownshaft.Palmier mexicain massif à la couronne dense. -10 to -12°C (14 to 10°F). Buy it online in 3-litre pots.
Sabal texana, Texas palmetto, Oaxacan palmetto
Mexico, the south of the USA
-10 to -12°C (14 to 10°F)
A massive 15-metre tall palm, with a dense crownshaft. The large green leaves look darker in the shade, and sometimes look bluish. The bases of old fallen leaves make lattice patterns on the trunk.
Place it in full sun or in partial shade in a rich wet soil. It can withstand some draught once established, but prefers regular watering. It is also wind- and sea spray-resistant, and thus well adapted to the seaside. It can also do well in a container.
The trunks are rot-proof, and are used in Texas to make poles, especially in harbours.
