A very easy exotic-looking South-American palm. -12°C (10°F). Buy it online in 90- and 100-litre pots.
Woolly jelly palm, Cocos eriospatha
Grassy lands in south Brazil
-12°C (10°F): one of the hardiest Butia
Close to Butia capitata, it can reach 3 to 6 metres; its narrow elegant arching leaves are blue green, and the inflorescence has a woolly red brown sheath, and red flowers, followed by fleshy yellow fruit.
Like capitata, it is a very easy palm to grow. Place it in full sun, in a rich, drained soil, with regular watering (at the foot). Avoid chalky soils.
Its macerated fruit is part of the 'palm wine' recipe. Its tasty flesh tastes like orange and pineapple.
