Origin of Phoenix theophrastii
Discovered in Crete in 1967, it is one of the few European palms, along with Chamaerops humilis. It can also be found in some parts of Turkey.

Description of Phoenix theophrastii
Close to the real date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), it is more compact, with prickly silvery blue leaves. Its fruit is edible, though smaller in size than the date palm's.

Just like Phoenix canariensis, it prefers full sun, a rich soil and regular watering in summer, but it is more drought-resistant.
Story time
It gets its name from the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, a pupil of Plato and Aristotle; his works mark the beginnings of botanical science.
